چکیده

background: low dose theophylline may have some anti-inflammatory effects on copd patients. this study was conducted to determine the effect of oral low dose theophylline on serum crp level in patients with stable copd. methods: in this double blind randomized clinical trail study, 50 patients (25 in experimental and 25 in placebo group) were enrolled into the study by randomized blocking method. serum hs-crp using elisa method was measured before and after the study. data was analyzed using t-test and paired t-test. results: there was no significant difference in gender, age, smoking and spirometry variables before study between two groups. serum hs-crp level remained the same between two groups before and after the intervention. conclusion: more studies with large sample size needed to find anti-inflammatory effect of theophylline on macrophages and neutrophils and their derivative inflammatory materials in copd patients.

A meta-analysis on the efficacy of oral theophylline in patients with stable COPD

BACKGROUND Theophylline is a nonspecific inhibitor of phosphodiesterases that, despite exerting bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effects, is a third-line therapy rarely used to treat chronic airflow limitation. We wished to evaluate the efficacy of oral theophylline as measured by improvements in trough (pre-dose) or peak (post-dose) FEV1 and FVC in patients with clinically stable COPD. D...

Low-dose theophylline enhances the anti-inflammatory effects of steroids during exacerbations of COPD.

BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by an abnormal inflammatory response mainly to cigarette smoke that flares up during exacerbations of the disease (ECOPD). Reduced activity of histone deacetylases (HDAC) contributes to enhanced inflammation in stable COPD. It was hypothesised that HDAC activity is further reduced during ECOPD and that theophylline, an HDA...

Intravenous aminophylline in patients already taking oral theophylline: effect on calculated dose of knowledge of serum theophylline concentration on admission.

Measurement of serum theophylline concentration is usually recommended before intravenous aminophylline is given to patients taking oral theophylline. Fifty patients with worsening airflow obstruction, all of whom were taking oral theophyllines and who had no contraindication to the use of parenteral aminophylline, were randomly allocated into two groups before treatment was given. The dose of ...

The impact of diurnal fasting during Ramadan on the lipid profile, hs-CRP, and serum leptin in stable cardiac patients

AIM To study the effect of strict prolonged fasting on lipid profile, serum leptin, and high- sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in patients with different stable cardiac illnesses and look for associated new cardiac events and any correlation between entire variables. METHODS A total of 56 patients of different stable cardiac illnesses were followed in our cardiology outpatient for 3 mo...

Study on Effectiveness of Low Dose Theophylline as Add-on to Inhaled Corticosteroid for Patients with Sulfur Mustard Induced Bronchiolitis

Background: Theophylline may reverse steroid resistance and decrease inflammation in patients with chronic pulmonary disease and sulfur mustard (SM) induced bronchiolitis. This study was designed to assess the effects of low-dose theophylline on improvement of pulmonary function tests (PFTs) of SM exposed patients. Methods: In this comparative observational study, a group of SM-exposed victims d...

The additive effect of theophylline on a high-dose combination of inhaled salbutamol and ipratropium bromide in stable COPD.

STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine the additive effect of oral theophylline in patients with stable COPD who received both inhaled salbutamol, 400 micrograms, and ipratropium bromide, 80 micrograms, four times daily administered with a metered-dose inhaler. DESIGN Twenty-four male patients with stable COPD (FEV1, 0.96 +/- 0.43 L; 36.8 +/- 17.0 percent predicted [% pred]) completed a randomized, dou...
